Hollywood has created several different films based on the Mission: Impossible series. There are five films in total that have been released. The "Mission: Impossible" television series is an American action drama television series created by Bruce Geller. It is based on the film series of the same name created by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise. The Paramount Television-based show has aired on CBS since September 23, 1988 with its final episode airing June 1, 2000. The show ran for five seasons with one season being held up due to a strike from 1992 until 1997 before being cancelled. The show revolves around the fictional character of Ethan Hunt, portrayed by Tom Cruise, who leads a team of covert government operatives known as the Impossible Missions Force. The plot of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise usually revolves around Ethan Hunt, who works for an agency called The Impossible Missions Force (IMF) where he performs covert missions across the world to fight against criminals and organizations that threaten world peace. The plot also involves Hunt's love interest named Julia Thorne (Michelle Monaghan). In the first two "MI" films, the team is based in the United States where they stay undercover as a cover for their operations. In subsequent films, they have been shown as being based in France, England and Switzerland. Ethan's wife, Julia Thorne (Monaghan) and daughter who is portrayed by Vanessa Kirby (Jessica Lee Rose), both make appearances in all five films. The first four movies were directed by Brian De Palma who was the series' executive producer and introduced Tom Cruise to audiences before he became an established actor. The fifth film was directed by Christopher McQuarrie who is not an executive producer but worked on the script of the film before it was filmed with John Woo as a consultant. The franchise originally had its roots in the 1974 film "The Odessa File" which starred Peter Hunt, the younger brother of Tom Cruise. It was written by Christopher McQuarrie, who also wrote the original "Mission Impossible" film for which he was credited as co-writer. In 1987, Paramount Pictures hired McQuarrie to write a remake before hiring David Giler and Walter Parkes to rewrite the script, with the two proceeding to develop a full script from there. By December 1989, screenwriter Leslie Dixon had been hired for rewrites. In 1988, Bryan Burroughs and John Logan were brought on board as writers.
